CANADA - To the islands

If you were a little disappointed with the pictures of Toronto on the last post, fear not because today I have been to Toronto's islands. They are a group of low lying islands just off Toronto's waterfront and it takes about 10 minutes to get there by ferry. Both the ferry and the islands give fantastic views of the city skyline.

The islands are operated as a recreational park for the people of Toronto with walks, beaches, cafes, an amusement park etc. and are a very popular day or afternoon trip. However, they also support a resident population of about 750 people at one end. The islands were subject to widespread flooding earlier this year because of the high water levels in the lake in May, consequently as you walk around there are still a lot of sandbags about.

The islands also have a Disc Golf course on them. Disc Golf is popular here (and a quick check on the internet has revealed you can play it in the UK too). It's like regular golf (the scoring is the same) but it is played with a disc which is like a frisbee but smaller and heavier. It is thrown from a tee off point and you are aiming for a metal basket. It's main advantage over golf is that you can play through trees etc so a course does not require the large scale landscape changes that golf does.
