GERMANY - Schwerin

I am currently in Schwerin which is the capital of the German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The state roughly covers the large block in the north of the country between Hamburg in the west and Poland in the east. It is low lying and therefore fairly flat, forested and has many lakes. Schwerin is built beside a series of lakes and is the smallest of the state capitals. It appears to be quite sleepy in the evenings - or at least it is at the beginning of the week.

So what's here? A big castle and lets face it the Germans do castles well!

This was the seat of the Grand Dukes of Mecklenburg-Schwerin who ruled this area until the end of WW1 and is situated on an island in a lake. The building now houses the local parliament but the state rooms have been restored and are open to the public. They are the usual succession of richly decorated rooms that lead you to a throne room and of course with Meissen not being too far away, there is a large collection of porcelain.

There are also extensive castle gardens, a cathedral, and the central area of the city is pedestrianised. All in all, Schwerin is a nice place to wander around and relax by the water. Yesterday evening I was able to enjoy a really nice dinner, sitting outside overlooking the lake which was just as well since the train journey here from Bremen was not one of Deutsche Bahn's best efforts. It only takes just under 2 hours on a through train but I was 1hr 48 minutes late. So just like the UK, I've put in a claim - fortunately they have Delay Repay forms in English here!
