Greetings from Plzen and before we do anything today lets deal with something that I am finding weird. In English this city is spelt Pilsen but in Czech it's Plzen - where is the missing i ? Its pronounced as if there is an i there, but I have noticed there are quite a few missing vowels in Czech.
Next we have to cover breakfast, the hotel breakfast was the usual buffet type affair but the hotel has a robot that tours the restaurant moving from table to table collecting your dirty plates etc. It's strange how you interact with it, when it comes to your table you feel you have to give it something, when you have finished you feel you can't leave until it comes to collect your plates, Funny but odd.
Plzen is a city in Bohemia whose old town is built around a large square that has the Cathedral of St Bartholomew at its centre. Lovely colourful old, well maintained buildings surround it.
Where there is a cathedral, there is usually a tower to climb, bells to be seen and views to be had.
Of course Plzen really means beer. The city has given the world Pilsner larger so of course a tour round the Pilsner Urquell brewery is the order of the day.
As most of you have visited a brewery by now, I don't have to go into great detail except to say that Pilsner Urquell has protected geographical status which means that every pint or bottle of Pilsner Urquell consumed around the world is produced here in Plzen.
The brewery is therefore a very big affair but the tour is not super corporate and you get to go into the bottling hall as well
