Things an Englishman has learnt about America so far

The country that gave us the Jerry Springer Show finds the adultery and false witness parts of the 10 commandments a bit outdated. They have therefore been updated for the 21st century.

I had to go to the Transit Museum to find the famous WALK / DON'T WALK traffic signs. On the streets of New York they have all been replaced with red hands and white men. Is this a indication of the number of people there who don't have English as their first language?

They still have them in Connecticut though.

Looking at the New York's subway system you realise the vast amounts of money that are being poured into London's transport network. The subway system is big, busy, fast and reasonably efficient - it is also old, dirty, smelly and has a very outdated ticket system. As a regular user of the tube I can only describe the New York subway as quaint - but it's also cheap!

The barbers is different. Six weeks after I left home and I needed a haircut. Firstly they cut your hair facing away from the mirror and turn you round at the end - it's a bit unnerving when you can't keep an eye on what they're doing. At home, they usually finish by getting the hairdryer and using that to blow off the little bits of hair. Here in the US, he got a handheld vacuum and hoovered my head - seriously!

Don't tell Southern or the RMT but trains here usually have 3 conductors/guards on them. One senior who is in charge of the train and two assistants.  Ticket checking is thorough and they are mega helpful, chatty, cheerful and extremely polite. Remember that the train is not the default method of travel for most people here so all the rail companies really work hard with the customers they have.

Note the little yellow step because this station doesn't really have a platform. Another step folds out of the train.

And the most shocking find of all ..... The Milky Way's are different.

In the US they have different types and as I can't ever remember a dark chocolate version in the UK, I bought one, thinking Dark Chocolate Milky Way, mmmmmm. Only to find that it has a layer of caramel inside so is actually a Mars, which I'm not so keen on. However since Mars is an American Company and not an English one, I guess I will have to complain to Donald on that rather than Theresa and Boris.
