GERMANY - It's not Grimm in Bremen

The City Hall Bremen
I didn't really know what to expect from Bremen - which features in one of Grimm's Fairy Tales about a cockerel, a cat, a dog and a donkey that run off to be musicians in Bremen - but one thing I can say is, it's definitely not grim!

Bremen is a Hanseatic city and therefore has large squares surrounded by that beautiful North European architecture. There is also the Schnoor, an area of narrow streets and alleys lined with gabled houses. I took a two hour English language walking tour (on which I was the only English person - we were a group from right round the world) with a very lively and enthusiastic guide who told me he had been to London three times this year already. He was a Whovian and had attended to several Dr Who events in the UK - We had a lot to talk about!

The animals from the fairy tale
The local hero in these parts is Roland, Charlemagne's nephew, the legend is that Bremen will stay free and independent as long as he stands watch over the city. Bremen is a city state and the smallest state in Germany - Roland's statue keeps watch in the main square. Sounds a bit like the ravens at the Tower of London to me!!
